“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (1 John 3:16 ESV)
That “he” is Jesus. Jesus laid down His life for us. This was an act of condition-less love as recognized in Romans 5:8 (ESV), “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
“For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” (1 John 3:11 ESV)
How may we love one another? How may we lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters?
- Forgive?
- Let go of a grudge?
- Recognize the plank that is in our own eye?
- Sacrifice our own wants for the benefit of another?
- Other?
